Details Date Night
What: Details Date Night | When: April 2019 | Where: Millbridge Court
We were thrilled to be involved in Millbridge Court‘s very first Details Date Night. This evening is designed for couples who are planning their wedding to revisit their chosen venue and start to imagine how all the elements will come to life. As part of the planning journey we’re there to get the creative ball rolling for our brides and groom. This includes all the crucial touches – such as flowers, food and photography – and even sizing up the space. Meanwhile they’re free to ask questions and get inspiration on how best to use the beautiful venue.
Food and drink inspiration
For us, it’s a great opportunity to showcase just some of our food and drinks ideas – and demonstrate the imaginative ways we love to present them! For instance, our brand new luxury cheese board went down a storm. We pieced together a luxurious selection of five cheeses, runny honey, grapes, dried apricots, figs, almonds, breads, wafers and chutneys for this gorgeous display.
Also, alongside the cheese board was our new Cookie Corner – a tempting trio of cookies and mini cookie bites with cold milk served in milk bottles with fun, stripy straws. Couples were welcomed to help themselves during the evening, as well as taking home a selection of sweet bites to save for later.
In addition, during the evening we served up a tasty selection of canapés, such as Parma ham pastry with tomato and mozzarella; Summer chicken, chorizo and corn; Mushroom croquette with tarragon mayo, plus Thai prawn tacos. The evening was a great success and we met some great couples who all left brimming with plenty of plans and all kinds of new ideas how to make their wedding day extra special.

The Springles
Making sure your wedding memories last a lifetime is guaranteed if you have photographs you’ll cherish forever. We love working with husband and wife duo Ash and Kat, AKA The Springles. They have a completely remarkable talent for capturing the wonder in every moment. And it helps that they’re lovely people too. We sat down with them to find out a little more about their secrets for making your day a cut above, and what top tips they have for choosing your wedding photographer…
Q // How did you both start out in photography, and is it something you always wanted to do?
Ash started taking photos of bands when he was younger and then studied photography at college, working in film. Kat started taking photos as a nightclub promoter and is self-taught. Both of us have always had a love of photography and we feel humbled every day that it is our job. Neither of us thought we’d ever have ‘professional photographer’ on our CV!
Q// How would you describe your signature style?
Our work is warm, romantic and natural. You will find most of our couples are pictured in nature because we feel a strong sense of connection to our environment. We place a strong emphasis on creating space for couples to interact as they would naturally, so we direct very little and we never ‘fake’ or force anything.
Q// Who and what inspires you in your work?
Our greatest inspiration will always be the natural world. We believe human beings are truly remarkable and that love has the power to unite and to change things for the better. We also have a deep love of travel, architecture, music and design, and we like to try and channel those influences in our work.
Q// What works well collaborating as a husband and wife team?
We each bring a different creative perspective. There is no ego; once we’ve shot an event we never check whose work was whose. When you’re looking at a Springles image you’re effectively looking at our two creative brains working as one.
Q// You’ve worked quite extensively with Kalm Kitchen. What has been your experience of them, and what is it about them you like the most?
Kalm Kitchen has an unrivalled level of professionalism and have a real heart for people. They are a driven and creative company who pride themselves on excellence and attention to detail. We love that about them. Also we adore how everything they do comes out of relationships. They are ‘people people’ first and foremost and we believe that’s at the core of any really inspirational business.
Q// What has been the most beautiful or memorable project you’ve worked on?
We were privileged to work on a beautiful intimate wedding in Tuscany with a wonderful couple who trusted our vision for their day implicitly. They completely included us in their day along with their small party of 20 guests, and it felt wonderful to be so involved. We laughed when they laughed, cried when they cried. We believe connection with other people is the stuff of life, so for us it was just the dream day at work.
Q// What would be your dream event to photograph?
Any wedding day where the bride and groom have been completely true to their vision for the day is a dream to work on. Weddings come in all shapes and sizes and they’re all unique and wonderful in their own way. But the best weddings are the ones where the couple feel totally relaxed, at ease, and are having fun.
Q// Tell us a bit your own wedding day. And any golden rules lessons you learnt during the planning process!
We got married at the church where Kat’s parents were married, and then had our reception on a local farm. We hired in everything; catering, tables and chairs, décor, right down to forks! We had enamel jugs on each table which Kat hand-painted in a ‘Roses and Castles’ bargeware motif, vibrantly coloured wild floristry and ribbons everywhere. Our favours were horse brasses. We spent the afternoon watching morris dancers, listening to our friend playing acoustic guitar and drinking local beer sat on hay bales. In the evening we had a BBQ and a folk band. We had the best day ever and wouldn’t change a thing. Our top tip is to discuss what really matters to you right at the beginning of the planning process, and spend your budget on making those things the best they can be.
Q// What advice would you give to couples who are currently researching photographers for their big day?
In many ways photographs are the ONLY thing (apart from your memories and your marriage) that will last beyond the wedding day. Our tips for choosing your photographer are:
- Choose a professional photographer rather than a hobbyist and book them in good time before the day
- Make sure you really like them; you’ll spend loads of time with them on the day!
- Make sure you love their work and have seen enough portfolio to be confident that they consistently deliver the style you love so much
- Check what their past couples are saying about them online in reviews etc.
- Remember that photography is an art form, and the camera is just a tool. When you book a photographer you are buying their artistic perspective. It’s worth bearing that in mind as you research.

Breakfast Platters
Wedding day mornings are notoriously busy, so our new breakfast grazing tray platter is the perfect solution. We deliver this feast first thing to be casually enjoyed by brides, grooms or any of the wedding party while the preparations are underway. We’re huge fans of any food that can be shared, and this early start extravaganza is a welcome addition to the Kalm Kitchen line-up.
Stacked with morning treats such as fresh fruit, nuts, cheeses, pastries and banana bread, it’s designed for diving into. And the feedback we’ve had so far is that it’s utterly delicious.
Event & Styling Manager, Pete Holder says, ‘I have always been a massive lover of sharing boards. My favourite style of food is a selection of delectable things to snack on. That’s why we created this morning tray for our brides and grooms. Now they can have that experience right from the start of their special day.’
Talk to us about how we can cater all the way from breakfast through to late night snacks. Get in touch at info@kalmkitchen.co.uk or call us on 01483 813360.

Monochrome Minimalism
‘Colour schemes, along with venues are one of the first talking points when I meet with my gorgeous couples. In my opinion, you can’t go more classic than a monochrome minimalism scheme. It creates an effortlessly modern feel and when executed the right way, you have a timeless wedding to look back on for life.
The question is, ‘where do I start?’ Well, I firmly believe that with a team of suppliers who share the same vision, this monochromatic movement can come to life and be painted in front of your eyes.
Without further ado, here are some top tips to perfect the visual (and edible) elements for your big day…
Flowers
I had the pleasure of sitting down with the fabulous Hannah Berry Flowers to ask what our couples should be seeking to create this key look. Here is what she had to say:
“I love it when I am approached with a monochromatic theme. It is the perfect mix of muted tones and architectural chic. We are talking about sharp lines and grey, white and noir hues that combine beautifully. My advice would be to go for foliage such as twisted willow and florals like White Anemone that will really elevate the look. Working with props and stationery also complements the feel. I love it when everything pieces together”
Stationery & Styling
Place cards, menus, table plans and table names are a huge part of the styling of your wedding breakfast. What better way than to have this designed by Nats Paper Studio. Her Australian contemporary style and interior/fashion design elements breathe through her brand and she uses all of these routes to create a bespoke look for your big day. As a Kalm Kitchen bride, you can see the amazing photographs from her Monochrome wedding at Millbridge Court on her blog on Nats Paper Studio.
You could opt for pairing up your stationery with clean and modern cutlery, which will provide the wow factor. Equally, serving food on matching black matte crockery would also add to the stand-out vibe necessary for creating the look. Natalie’s flair saw her mixing up origami animals and stunning black and grey candles.
Balloons
Balloon styling has completely ‘blown up’ ( if you pardon the pun) and really gives a theatrical edge to your big day. Bubblegum Balloons have created some amazing pieces of work using their Monochrome Balloon installations. They have an amazing eye for creating a pool of balloons flowing from key features of your venue. For me, it is a work of art!
Venues
A blank canvas gives you the freedom to play around with all your ideas. Here are two venues that are minimalist heaven:
Who To Follow
For inspiration, I always look at different modes of design to get my cogs turning on minimalistic ideas. I have an endless list of instagramers who I follow, but here are a select few to start looking at today…

Cookie Corner
Introducing our all-new food stall – cookie corner! At Kalm Kitchen, we’re always working on new ways to wow at weddings and events. So, this season we’re launching a treat-laden tribute to everyone’s favourite sweet bite. This gorgeous cookie corner stall hosts a display of three different flavoured cookies. There’s double chocolate chip, oatmeal and raisin and delectable toffee chocolate chip.
Event & Styling Manager, Pete Holder was responsible for bringing this concept to life. He says, ‘Cookies are a real home comfort, but we’ve elevated them to a new level here. This station is versatile enough for your whole day, whether that’s to start the event as a pre-ceremony treat, to round off your evening, or as favours for your guests to take home, for instance.’

Corporate Showcase
What: The Garden Museum Corporate Showcase | When: February 2019 | Where: The Garden Museum
We recently took a trip to one of our favourite London venues, The Garden Museum, to host an altogether different kind of event. The evening was put together to showcase the venue to local corporate clients and explore how this eye-catching space can be be used for functions. Our task was to bring along some of our most spectacular catering creations.
Talented florist Elizabeth Marsh and her team had created a beautiful ribbon-festooned walkway, cascading up to the main interior of the museum. This led our guests on a magical journey before being greeted by our awe-inspiring Edible Garden.
The Edible Garden took inspiration from the beautiful grounds at The Garden Museum. We wanted to bring a taste of outside inside, and create a wholesome and delicious display. An abundance of fresh, wild foliage dressed the edible garden structure – once again provided by Elizabeth Marsh Floral Design, – and then we filled it with opulent seasonal vegetables for styling and eating. Along with the vegetables, the colourful display dazzled with spiced nuts, hummus, sun-blush tomatoes, Burrata, pea and mint dip and pitta crisps. The virtuous nibbles were accompanied by carrot & ginger, beetroot & apple, and kale, cucumber & apple juice shots.
Next up was our Blush Patisserie Bar, which became known on the night as ‘Candy Land’. This delectable display included lemon verbena and chamomile crème brulée with chamomile shortbread; sparking elderflower, honeysuckle and berry jelly and orange panna cotta with edible flowers. Pretty macarons, supplied by Le Papillon Patisserie, chocolate lollipops and botanical cookies completed this sweet selection.
Praise for Kalm Kitchen
The evening was a great success and our hosts emailed afterwards to pass on their thanks. ‘We loved having you and it was really a grand success. We have heard nothing but good feedback and felt the night went so well. Hoping to have you guys do something here again. The food and desserts were delicious!’

Grace
Meet Kalm Kitchen’s new addition to the team – Event Manager Grace. Joining us from a stint travelling the world as cabin crew at BA, Grace tells us why she’s a pro at rustling up Buddha bowl and why she spends her spare time upside down. Plus, she shares her pro tips for planning a perfect party…
Q// Hi Grace, when did you join Kalm Kitchen and what have been your first tasks to get stuck into?
I first joined Kalm Kitchen in 2017 as part of the waiting staff team alongside my college studies. I absolutely loved working at all of the exciting events throughout that year. And being surrounded by such a lovely team of people made it so much fun. Following college, I took a couple of years out to work and travel. My mum actually sent me the advert for the new role at Kalm Kitchen as she knew how much I enjoyed my time with the company a few months ago. I applied and am so grateful to be back. Since returning, I have gone straight back into working and running the events as well as learning how to hold planning meetings with some of our wonderful clients.
Q// Tell us a little about what you did before joining Kalm Kitchen.
Before Kalm Kitchen I worked for British Airways as Cabin Crew. I worked both long and short haul travelling all over the world.
Q// What did your role at British Airways entail?
My role at British Airways could be very diverse. Although most of the time my job was focused around customer service and serving meals at 30,000 feet, Cabin Crew are also trained to be able to deal with a huge range of safety and security situations and can administer first aid to passengers when necessary. It could be quite scary at times but you definitely learn to keep your cool.
Q// Did you get to travel to some amazing places… Any highlights?
I was incredibly lucky to be able to travel to so many different places throughout my time at BA. I have always loved the United States and Australia, particularly Boston and the Gold Coast. Some of the best trips were the ones I could take my family on and show them around new destinations. Those were a real highlight for me.
Q// What are the things you’re most looking forward to about working with Kalm Kitchen?
Everything! It has been so much fun working at Kalm Kitchen from a different perspective than before, and getting to know the amazing team. I am particularly excited to have the opportunity to take couples through the whole process of planning and help to create their special day.
Q// What are the particular skills you think you have that make you good at your job?
Having studied graphic design and photography at school I really enjoy bringing new, creative ideas to the table, and I am always open to trying new things. I am also very committed and organised, which I have already found extremely helpful in this job.
Q// If you could choose a dream party to plan, what would it be?
I would love to plan a summer wedding for a friend or family member. I love the summer and I think that working with someone you know really well to create their vision would be such an amazing experience.
Q// What are your best tips for hosting a super successful party?
Don’t try to please everyone! Keep it simple and aim to create something that you will enjoy. If you are having fun your guests will be too.
Q// What’s your favourite food, meal and ingredient? And what’s your foodie guilty pleasure?
I am totally obsessed with sweet potatoes and bananas! I love Buddha bowls, smoothies and in the summer I live off of Acai bowls. My guilty pleasure would have to be any vegan cookies, banana bread or the Kalm Kitchen vegan brownies, which are incredible!
Q// What’s your signature dish – the one you’re an absolute pro at rustling up?
I would say any type of Buddha bowl. I use all of the left over vegetables, beans and rice from the week, make some type of sauce or dressing and it always seems to turn out pretty good!
Q// What do you do in your downtime?
I love yoga, so you can normally find me upside down at home or at the yoga studio! I also love to read, walk the dog and experiment with new vegan recipes. Plus I spend a lot of time with my gorgeous family and we all love to travel and explore new places as much as we can.
Q// What did you want to be when you were growing up, and are there any unfulfilled ambitions?
I always wanted to be a dancer. I danced from a very young age and was constantly performing or practicing at home. My focus shifted from dance as it was very competitive and I decided I didn’t want to be a part of that. I discovered yoga last year and have loved learning and exploring this way of moving. I would definitely like to do my yoga teacher training soon, travelling to somewhere like India or Bali to complete it as authentically as possible.
Q// If you had to make a rule for one day and everyone had to follow it, what would it be?
It’s not my rule but Metta. Metta means to care and wish well for other beings without judging them, to accept them independently of agreeing or disagreeing with them, and without wanting anything from them in return. It is a universal love that can overcome all social, religious, ethnic, political and economic barriers.
Q// What’s your favourite book, film and song?
I am a huge fan of both books and movies so I don’t think I could ever choose favourites. But I love all of John Green`s books, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs, Nine Perfect Strangers by Liane Moriarty and all the Harry Potter books of course! Some of my favourite films are Love Actually, The Fault in Our Stars and Me Before You. You can normally find me listening to any Dean Lewis song.
If you’d like to speak to Grace or any of our lovely team about planning an event or your special day, get in touch at info@kalmkitchen.co.uk or call us on 01483 813360.
