At the Wheel with The Farnham Pottery

A place of quiet creativity and enduring craftsmanship, The Farnham Pottery has been a long-standing friend to Kalm Kitchen.

Just a short journey from our HQ, this locally cherished space has become a source of both inspiration and collaboration.

We’ve recently partnered with founder Alex and his team to develop a new collection of ceramic wares, crafted especially for Kalm Kitchen. These pieces are rooted in tradition, made by hand, and destined to appear in settings as varied as private tastings and, soon, at The Pop-Up Hotel this summer. Watch this space.

We asked Alex, founder of The Farnham Pottery, a few questions about the story behind the space, the process of making by hand, and what it means to collaborate with local partners like Kalm Kitchen.

What drew you to The Farnham Pottery and its story?

There’s a quiet magic to this place. Its history is rooted in making, and you can feel that in the walls. I was drawn to the idea of continuing a legacy while giving it space to evolve. It’s rare to find somewhere with so much character, yet still so much potential.
The Farnham Pottery has always been a space that values creativity, craftsmanship and connection to place.

Can you tell us about your process, from raw clay to finished piece?

It always starts with the material. We work slowly and purposefully, shaping each piece by hand or wheel before firing, glazing and refining. It’s not about rushing to the finish, but responding to how the clay behaves at every stage. That patience is what gives the pieces their unique quality.

How do you balance form and function when designing tableware for service?

The Farnham Pottery made functional and decorative tableware for Liberty & Co, dating back to 1909. We often take inspiration from the original designs, but encourage clients and our in-house potter to modernise designs to fit the functional requirements and personality of our clients.

In terms of function and durability, handmade stoneware pieces are much more durable than mass-produced slipcase items, which helps ensure they stand up to service. That’s the balance, beauty with utility. When something is considered at every stage, it becomes a joy to use without ever shouting for attention.

What does collaboration mean to you, especially with local partners like Kalm Kitchen?

Collaboration is about listening. When we work with a partner like Kalm Kitchen, it’s not just about aesthetics, it’s about understanding how the ceramics will live in the space, how they’ll be used and handled. Being local adds to that ease and depth. There’s real mutual respect.

Our collaboration with Kalm Kitchen grew naturally from shared values and a local understanding. What started as conversations over coffee turned into exciting ideas for bespoke wares that could elevate event dining experiences in a meaningful way.

What makes The Farnham Pottery such a special place to work and visit?

It’s a working studio that welcomes you in. There’s the odd spot of clay on the floor, the smell of coffee in the air, and a real sense of creative openness. Whether you’re here to make something or just to sit and take it all in, there’s a warmth that stays with you.

Through the Lens: A First Look at Our New Wares

As our collaboration with The Farnham Pottery has evolved, their beautiful handmade pieces have begun to appear across Kalm Kitchen’s latest food stations.

We recently captured a selection of these moments behind the scenes, highlighting the subtle details and craftsmanship that make each piece unique.

“It’s a pleasure to collaborate so closely with a team that shares our values of craft, care and community. Together with Kalm Kitchen, we’re creating something rooted in the local landscape and designed to last.”
